Back To Black

There’s a new shade to consider for your home – if you’re bold enough to try it.

In stark defiance to the ubiquitous white-on-white trend that’s been dominating homes for the past few years, black is making its mark. From wall-to-wall darkness to stunning black features, we’ve got a few styling ideas to help you navigate the dark side.

Pitch black and designed to inspire, this space is a perfect example of making this bold look work. The most efficient way to balance out black maximalism is with natural light, and the large windows here ensure there’s a steady flow of light to give life to the space.

The fireplace is also a beautiful juxtaposition between light and dark as well, being both functional and a gorgeous facet of the design.

A slightly brighter alternative, this kitchen manages to be both edgy and open at the same time. The matte black cabinets and island bench correspond beautifully with the Scandinavian grey and white features, and the plants add natural colour to the palette.

Mixing natural light with fresh greenery is the key to success here, taking the look to the light side.

For a unique twist on the trend, consider this kitchen, which boasts gloss-black features.

Juxtaposing the sleek modern black cabinets with the rustic charm of the brick walls, this is one home that is excitingly unique.

This amazing aesthetic choice makes the space look futuristic and ahead of the curve. While it may not be a favourite for every family home, this pop of thrilling contemporary design is a surefire way of putting an individualistic stamp on your home.

Hit The Right Notes With ILVE

Promising the utmost safety in the kitchen, the new Piano Flush Cooktop by ILVE incorporates state-of-the-art innovative technologies that prevent hazards while cooking.

The Piano Flush is the ideal choice for skilful chefs, families with young children, and first-time cooks who lack confidence in the kitchen, thanks to the safety measures it guarantees.

With the latest technology in gas cooktops, the Piano Flush utilises forward-thinking technologies, such as automatic re-ignition. The cooking surfaces will make up to three attempts to re-ignite automatically in the situation of the cooktop’s flame going out.

Alternatively, if the cooktop does not ignite, the protection against gas leaks (Gasprotekt) intervenes. Providing confidence when cooking with gas, ILVE’s cutting-edge cooktop utilises a sensor to detect the temperature of each burner when it is turned off: lighting the letter H on the relative digital display until the temperature lowers to a tepid level, allowing the burner to be cleaned.

Piano Flush Cooktop

Design-wise, the Piano Flush includes four gas burners – comprising large, medium, and small sizes – front sensor touch controls, and cast-iron grills. Offered with the Piano Series, the cast-iron grills are designed to provide styling that is as flush as possible, while safeguarding the efficiency of the burners, to avoid dispersion of the heating power of the flame.

For greater protection of solid work surfaces, the thickness of the grills has been increased at their external perimeter. As a perfect example of ILVE’s stylish and innovative kitchen appliances, the Piano Flush Cooktop will make an impression on any home cook, due to it’s sleek design, tech-savvy features, and, above all, by providing the latest safety features for gas cooking.

ILVE’s Piano Flush Cooktop is available in selected retailers and on display at ILVE showrooms nationally. For more information, log onto www.ilve.com.au or call 1300 694 583.

Making A Splash

While trends come and go in the kitchen, there’s one style staple that we can’t seem to shake.

Not only do splashbacks protect the walls in your kitchen against water, grease and dirt, they’re also an effective way to add flair to your kitchen’s aesthetic. There are so many styles to choose from when picking a splashback, and your choice is a great way to show off your personality, as well as complement your oven.

Whether it’s tile or brick, mirror or stainless steel – there’s a splashback for everyone and every oven. We’ve paired some splashback options with our classic ILVE oven models below:

White-on-white has been trending in the home for years now, and with good reason: the style gives an easy and pristine Scandinavian feel to the kitchen. By pairing a Bright White oven with white fittings, like the gorgeous textured splashback pictured, you can display your sense of sophistication (and cleanliness!) in your home.

Moving along with the monochromatic trend, this black and brick aesthetic is a great mix of refinement and warmth. Picking a tile scheme for a splashback is a fun way to make a functional item new and individual. The pattern here is different to most tile shapes, and gives a funky feel to this home.

To complement this midnight splashback, a Gloss Black Quadra ILVE is a beautiful accompanying piece.

In stark contrast to the white trend is this modern grey colour combination. Fit for an ever-so-cool kitchen, this smooth concrete splashback is hardy, fashionable and easy to clean. For an oven that matches the steely style of this home, and which also adds a little colour, try an Emerald Green ILVE.

When it’s time to add some colour to your home, a fresh and summery palette like this one is so on-trend. This printed splashback is an exciting feature in this kitchen, and provides a bit of pizzazz to a space that is too often associated with chores.

When it comes to an oven match, it’s best to let the splashback shine here – and a Stainless Steel ILVE is the right look. As stunning as it is practical, it’s a picture-perfect choice for a room with colourful details.

Much like the concept of splashbacks, ILVE’s ethos has always been based around marrying quality, timeless style, and function. Why not make this ideal pairing in your home?

Trend Watch: White Out

With marble, woods and exciting textures, this is a look that is anything but boring.

Of the many trends filtering through 2015, there is one that just might be our favourite. From interiors magazines to the web’s coolest design blogs, the Scandinavian-inspired white-on-white aesthetic has been a ubiquitous fixture.

Crisp, fresh and often wildly diverse from look-to-look, there is an all-white kitchen to suit any aesthetic. From modern minimalism to fresh takes on vintage whites, we’ve found the best light, bright kitchens to consider when thinking about adopting this chic look in your home.

The Classic Look:

This country-inspired kitchen uses white fittings, accessories and crockery to add a classic spin on the trend. The touches of greenery ensure that a homey feel emanates from the space.

Image via Fire Clay Tile

Another country-inspired look, this kitchen uses bleached wooden floorboards to give subtle hints of warmth to the space. While it’s not quite all-white, the creamier tones provide a family-friendlier feel.

The Modern Look:

Thoroughly contemporary and cute as can be, this marble-rich kitchen is a perfect example of white done right. With sweet pink accessories, flowers and art, this home is as welcoming as it is dreamy.

Image via Blackbird

Bone white and pure black have been curated here to create a too-cool monochromatic kitchen. The beauty here is in the contrast between the two shades, with the devil being in the details. The petite plant provides life, and the vintage touches provide depth to the space.

The Must-Have Accessory:

A white kitchen is perfect for those who want a space that screams luxury. To add a splash of this hot trend to your home, consider starting with accessories.

ILVE Quadra Double Oven in Bright White (featuring Teppanyaki Hot Plate)

The ILVE Quadra Double Oven in Bright White is an ideal way to introduce a stunning and extremely versatile white to your kitchen. The Quadra is available in sizes ranging from 60cm, 70cm, 80cm, 90cm, 100cm, 120cm and 150cm (with up to six different cooking surfaces), making this an ideal model for your bright, white, new kitchen!

Trend Watch: Tiny Homes

Could you live in a space of 30 square metres? With cities becoming increasingly cramped, and sustainable living becoming more and more appealing, the Small House trend is taking off!

Residing in constricting spaces has never been as trendy as it is in 2015! Through initiatives like the Tiny House Movement, living small is catching on big time.

The Tiny House Movement was originally adopted by people searching for sustainable, off-the-grid housing, or by those with few alternative housing options in metropolitan areas. However the trend came to be, we just can’t help admiring a movement that focuses on making the most of what you have.

So whether you’re downsizing, or required to choose a home that’s on the smaller side, there are still options for curating a smart and stylish home, no matter the size! Check out the homes below for some serious small-home inspiration.

The Zoku Loft, via Apartment Therapy

Click on the image to watch it move!

This Amsterdam apartment uses clever, moveable furniture to suit the mood of its owner. With the ability to change-up the structure of your apartment with the pull of a lever or the shifting of a staircase, this home is really making the most of its petite size.

Image from Buzzfeed via Pinterest.

Not only does this curtain give a dash of dreamy Moroccan style to the bedroom, the choice to separate it from the other living areas in a tiny home gives the illusion of more space. With the curtains acting as soft walls, the bedroom is isolated and given a life of its own.

The 5:1 Apartment in Gramercy Park, designed by MKCA

Click on the image to watch it move!

This uber-modern home in Gramercy, New York is another example of a tiny apartment that has taken advantage of its compact dimensions. With a living room-based bed that’s concealed yet still easily accessible, this home goes from entertainment centre to cosy bedroom in just a few movements.

Image via Kataram Studios

A prime example of the Tiny House Movement, this cabin is designed for both ease and aesthetic. Storage is everything when it comes to living in limiting spaces, so even after downsizing, every nook and cranny must be taken advantage of.

While these spaces meld function and an incredible sense of style, you might wonder: where do you make space to cook? Luckily, ILVE has got you covered!

ILCM45X Oven

Our ILCM45X model is a touch control built-in Combi Microwave & Oven that’s a perfect fit for any miniscule kitchen. The combination between the microwave and traditional cooking systems means a reduction in execution times and an increase in energy savings (compared to traditional ovens). You get the same cooking results, albeit in a tighter space.

The ovens in the Creative Compact series are fitted with the most advanced electronics, offering up to 60 automatic cooking programs and up to 100 custom programs. You also have the function of storing these programs on a simplified digital display.

Whether you’re already living in a snug space or considering making the move, the ILCM45X is made to suit your needs!

Interview with The Block's Kyal and Kara

kyal and kara

We had a chat with The Block fan favourites Kyal and Kara Demmrich about their design inspirations, advice for would-be renovators, and their life after The Block.

When did you discover your passion for renovating?

Our passion for renovating started when we were about 18. Kyal

was working as a carpenter and pulled some old Oregon weatherboards off an old house he was working on. He brought them home, and we made a huge frame for an old mirror. We realised at that point how we could recycle materials and make some really cool furniture. We bought our first home a couple of years later and got the chance to put some of these skills to action, we got addicted to the transformation process and the rest is history!

Who are your biggest design inspirations?

From an interior design point of view, Hecker Guthrie and his team are so amazing at creating beautiful spaces. They are definitely an awesome team of inspiring, creative people. Mark Tuckey and his team are inspiring, we love that their simple timber designs are always fresh and they use recycled timber and sustainably managed forestry sources. Architectural Digest is also an awesome place to go and get inspiration from around the world.

What is the best piece of renovation advice you learned from your time on The Block?

We learnt a lot about time casino online management and planning on The Block. Good quality workmanship can happen if you are pre-planning, are organised and have a great team behind you. In the “real world” its not always possible to turn a bathroom around as quickly as we do on The Block, however we learnt to be more efficient with our time, and we have taken a few of these skills into our own business.

What do you think would-be renovators should know before undertaking a home transformation?

First time renovators should know that you can”t complete a quality home renovation without professional tradesmen. It”s important for people to realise that there are a lot of things that you just can”t do without a professional, for example plumbing, electrical, structural carpentry work and tiling. It’s cheaper, and safer, in the long run to get a professional to complete these things. Planning is also important, not only in terms of layout and aesthetics, but also setting a budget. Also be clear as to what your goals are. Are you renovating to sell, as a “stepping stone” or is this your “dream home”? Thinking about these will help to ensure you don”t over-capitalise or have regrets about choices you are making.

the moment, and what do you predict to come into fashion?

Copper and brass are really hot at the moment, whether that is fixtures and fittings such as pendants and tap ware, or something a little less permanent, like copper candle holders or table lamps for styling. I predict we will be seeing some exciting new concepts in bathroom fitting designs, such as tapware of different finishes and colours. I can also see some Moroccan inspired designs making a come back in interior soft finishes and patterned tiles.

How is life after the Block? Tell us a bit about your new business.

Life after The Block has been very exciting for us! We have launched our own design and construct business Diverse Design & Construct. We offer a range of services including renovations, new builds, commercial and retail fit out and custom bespoke pieces. We have some exciting projects in the pipeline. We also have some great DIY videos coming later in the year, for those looking to undertake some small projects of their own. You can follow us on Facebook or Instagram, or check out our website for updates on projects.

We are also ambassadors for some great companies, including Bisley Workwear and Beaumont Tiles. This month Kyal and I are involved in a great initiative, “National Tradies Health Month” run by the Australian Physiotherapy Association and sponsored by Steel Blue Boots, it”s all about educating tradesmen on the importance of better health and safety.
